DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois men’s golf team will compete in Purdue’s Boilermaker Invitational for the fifth time in as many years on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21.

NIU will be joined in the field by a contingent of Midwest programs, including the host Boilermakers.  Akron, Chicago State, Cleveland State, Creighton, Drake, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kent State, Louisville, Loyola, Miami (Ohio), Michigan State, Toledo and Wichita State will also challenge the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.

“It is our last regular season event and arguably the deepest field we have been a part of with a number of Big Ten schools and six MAC schools,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “It’s almost like a preview of the conference championships coming in two weeks.

“Anytime you can go head-to-head with most of your conference on a neutral site, it will be a good preview. Four of the five players in our lineup have played Kampen, so there is nothing new there. It is a really hard Pete Dye golf course, very similar to the golf courses we have played the last two tournaments in Texas and The Glen Club, you have to be able to hit every club in your bag, and to score you have to do well with wedges and putters.”

Northern Illinois brings a wealth of experience to this event; four of the five players in Porten’s lineup have played in this event in prior years.  Redshirt senior Griffin Bauman (Cyrstal Lake, Ill./Central) will be making his fourth appearance, senior Bryce Emory (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) and senior Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) each have played in two tournaments at the Kampen Course and senior Greg Pohlmann (Decatur, Ill./Lakeview) played the tournament in 2010.

Bauman enters the event on the heels of a tie for 12th at the Kemper Sports Intercollegiate at The Glen Club.  Bauman fired a first-round 71 en route to topping the Huskie scorecard.  The finish was his best since he tied for sixth at the one-day Forest Hills Collegiate in late February.  Bauman has had mixed results in his three previous tries at the Kampen Course, finishing T57, T11, and T29 in 2010 through 2012, respectively.

Emory has had mild success in past trips to West Lafayette, Ind., finishing +15 in 2011 to tie for 25th and shooting a stroke better last year en route to a tie for 41st. Emory is two weeks removed from earning medalist honors at the Jim West Intercollegiate, last time out he tied for 45th at the Kemper Sports Intercollegiate.

Luedtke is back in the lineup this weekend after missing the Huskies’ last tournament.  Luedtke matched Emory at Purdue in 2011, tying for 25th, last year Luedtke finished T37 at the Kampen Course. The Aurora, Ill. native will look to regain the form that led him to a 3-0 record at the Mid-American Conference Match Play and a tie for 10th at the Forest Hills Collegiate in February.

Rounding out NIU’s lineup will be Pohlmann and sophomore Nick Schiavi (Barrington, Ill./Barrington).  Pohlmann will make his second straight start after making his spring debut this past week.  He knocked the rust off his clubs with his tie for 57th at The Glen Club, and will look to improve upon that in his second start of the spring.  Schiavi tied for 33rd at The Glen Club, shooting an even-par 72 in the final round.

The Boilermaker Invitational is set to tee off at 7:45 a.m. CT, on both Saturday and Sunday.  Live stats will be available at GolfStat.com.
