NIU Men’s Golf Seventh At MAC Championships, Schenk Named Second Team All-MAC

Westerville, OH — Nick Schenk (Batavia / Batavia) garnered some well-deserved recognition from the Mid-American Conference on Saturday, as the junior earned Second Team All-MAC accolades after leading the Northern Illinois University men’s golf team to seventh place at the 2005 MAC Men’s Golf Championships in Westerville, OH.

Schenk finished 19th overall to help the Huskies into seventh at the 10-team event, just one shot out of six and just 11 strokes removed from the top three. The Batavia, IL, native finished just one stroke outside of the top 15, but still managed to record his eighth top-20 finish of the year. Schenk also became the first Huskie to earn All-MAC honors since Tim Countryman in 2000.

“This was a well-deserved honor for Nick (Schenk),” head coach John Cleary said. “He has been steady at nearly every event and has been a great leader for this young team. We will have our entire roster back next season and to have an All-MAC returnee will make the 2005-06 season an exciting one for Huskie golf.”

Kent State golfers Ryan Yip and Tommy Wiegand shared tournament medalist honors with 72-hole totals of 277, while the Golden Flashes claimed the team title with a 33-under-par MAC Championship record score of 1,119. Eastern Michigan was second by 19 shots with a four-round 1,138.

Despite slipping to seventh, there was no denying NIU’s steady improvement this season. The Huskies registered a final-round 291 to fall just one shot behind Akron, but got great performances by freshmen Zach Jecklin (Bloomington / Bloomington) and Jared Steger (Winnetka / New Trier). Both rookies earned top-30 finishes, with Jecklin’s tie for 23rd leading the way. Steger saved his best round of the event for the finale, moving four spots up the final standings and into 26th with a 1-under-par 71.

After a tough opening-round 79, junior Dan Gratton (Roscoe / Rockton-Hononegah) finished well strong and tied for 38th after carding a 74. Ethan Roush (Decatur / Mt. Zion) capped NIU’s scoring on the day with a difficult 84 to finish 48th.

This was the final event of the spring for the Northern Illinois men’s golf team.
