DEKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois director of golf Tom Porten announced the signing of Pierrick Fillon and Billy White to join the NIU men’s golf program for the 2013-14 season.
Billy White, a Waukegan, Ill., native and Carmel Catholic High School graduate, has played the past two seasons at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. White closed his career at Indian Hills last month with an 11th-place finish at the NJCAA Division I National Championship, also helping his team to an 11th-place finish. White also earned the Jimmy Russell Award given to the NJCAA golf student-athlete of the year.
“We are very excited to bring Billy, who is a native of Illinois, back to his home state,” said Porten. “He had a great sophomore year at Indian Hills, culminating with a top-15 at the junior college nationals. He also received the Jimmy Russell Award, which speaks to both ends of the student-athlete experience.
“That experience will be key for us as we bring in several freshmen to the program. We see Billy stepping right in as an integral part of the team, both as a player and as a leader.”
White earned medalist honors in April at the Augustana Invitational and earned honorable mention recognition on the NJCAA Division I Ping All-American Team. In 2012, White helped Indian Hills to the NJCAA Division I National Championship team. He finished in the top ten in five of the eight tournaments he competed in 2012.
Pierrick Fillon, a native of Voreppe, France, is Porten’s first international signee during his tenure at NIU. Fillon has played around the world during his junior golf career, including a tie for 29th at the 2012 Doral-Publix Junior Golf Classic at Miami’s Doral Golf Resort, the host venue for the PGA Tour’s Cadillac Championship.
“Pierrick is an extremely bright and talented young man,” said Porten. “We feel very fortunate that he signed with us in the late signing period. We are looking forward to him joining us at Northern from France and I see him as being an immediate presence in our lineup. Pierrick is a very competitive young man and he has a terrific junior record in Europe.”
In 2012, Fillon won the Grand Prix of Gap; he also finished second at the Grand Prix de I’Ardeche, ninth in the French Under-18 Championship last year and competed in the British Boys Amateur Championship.
