DEKALB, Ill. - While some Huskie student-athletes spend their "off season" in summer school, participating in voluntary workouts, traveling or holding down summer jobs at home, three Northern Illinois men's golfers are honing their competitive skills in summer tournaments, and enjoying considerable success in the process.

On Wednesday, NIU seniors Andrew Frame (Manteno, Ill./Manteno HS) and Tim Kay (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett HS) became the latest examples of that success when they placed first and second in the United States Golf Association Amateur Public Links Qualifying tournament held at the Oak Club of Genoa. As a result, Frame and Kay earned spots in the field at the U.S. Amateur Public Links (APL) Championship, which will be held July 13-18 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.

Frame shot even par 142 on the par 71, 6,553-yard Oak Club course to win the sectional and advance to the U.S. APL Championship. He finished one stroke ahead of his NIU teammate Kay, who fired rounds of 72-71 to come in at one-over par 143. The Huskies almost made it a clean sweep out of their sectional as fellow Huskie senior Matt Triplett (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East HS) tied for fourth at the event with a five-over 147 for the 36 holes. He is the second alternate as the top three finishers in Genoa will play at the national tournament.

Frame's result in the APL Qualifying Tournament continued a strong week of golf for the Manteno product, who carries a 3.96 grade point average in education at NIU and was named to the Academic All-MAC and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams. On Monday, he played in the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club where he shot rounds of 74 and 65 to tie for second in the stroke play portion of that event. His six-under par 65 on the day's second round propelled him to the number three seed in the 16-man draw. The next day, he fell to Jeff Kellen of Illinois State, 1-up, in the round of 16.

Earlier in the summer, Triplett was one of just 20 golfers to advance to the second and final round of the Illinois State Public Links Championship, played at the par 71 Oak Grove Golf Course. After notching a one-over par 72 in the first round, he came back with a five-over 76 to place ninth at six-over 148.
