DEKALB, Ill. -- For the third consecutive year, the Northern Illinois men’s golf team will open season at home as it hosts the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The 54-hole event will begin on Friday, Sept. 6, and continue through Sunday, Sept. 8.

A highly competitive field will join the Huskies this weekend at Rich Harvest Farms, led by a trio of schools, Ball State, UCF and St. Mary’s, who played in last season’s NCAA Championship. Eight additional schools in the Northern Intercollegiate field, Houston, Indiana, Kentucky, Liberty, North Texas, San Diego, UT Arlington and Virginia, competed in the NCAA Regionals last spring. Also joining the Huskies this weekend in Sugar Grove are Louisville, Miami (Ohio) and Ohio State to round out the 15-team field.

“We are excited to once again open the season at home in the Northern Intercollegiate,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We have a great field this season, on our home course, one of the top golf courses in the country, and we are looking forward to seeing how our young team will play. We are extremely thankful to the Rich Family for their continued support in growing this event into one of the top events in the country.”

Setup at 7,236 yards and playing as a par 72 this weekend, Rich Harvest Farms will once again provide a stern challenge on the opening weekend of the season. The home of the 2009 Solheim Cup, the 2015 Palmer Cup and the LPGA International Crown in 2016, Rich Harvest Farms was rated No. 58 on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses for 2011-12. Rich Harvest Farms will host a NCAA Men’s Golf Regional this coming spring, May 15-17, 2014.

A new look NIU squad will tee it up this weekend in the opening event of the season as three of NIU’s five players will be seeing their first Division I action.

Familiar faces on the course for the Huskies will be junior Nick Huggins (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and senior Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North). Huggins boasts a returners-best 76.3 scoring average over his seven career starts.  Huggins competed in five events last season, including a fifth-place finish at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. Foley meanwhile has accumulated five top 20s and three top 10s over 23 collegiate starts.

Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC), Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) and Jake Curwin (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) are making their first appearances in the NIU lineup this weekend. White comes to NIU as a transfer from Indian Hills Community College in Iowa where he had an 11th-place finish at the NJCAA Division I National Championship last season.

Fillon, a native of Voreppe, France, is Porten’s first international signee during his tenure at NIU. He finished ninth in the French Under-18 Championship last year and competed in the British Boys Amateur Championship.

Curwin has competed on the Future Collegians World Tour (FWCT) while at Shattuck St. Mary’s, where he won a FCWT event at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club.

The young Huskie lineup will also include freshman Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./Nebraska Independent School), playing as an individual. Coe finished 49th at the prestigious Western Junior at the Country club of Florida last year.

Play will begin at 8 a.m., each day with tee times going off both No. 1 and No. 10 tees. The Huskies will play Friday’s opening round alongside Houston and St. Mary’s. Live scoring will be available via GolfStat.com
