Huntington, W. Va. - The Northern Illinois men's golf team moved up a position to 12th after three players broke par in the final round at Guyan Golf and Country Club.
The Huskies closed with a final-round 281 (-3) on Tuesday, the team's lowest team round since the 2009 Spartan Classic. NIU (855, +3) passed Bowling Green on the strength of its under-par round, and finished two strokes out of a four-way tie for eighth. Ohio State captured its 18th Marshall Invitational title in the 41 years of the event, finishing at -32 for the event.
"We almost climbed out of the hole we dug yesterday," said second-year head coach Tom Porten. "But we lost a few shots coming in to finish three under."
Bryce Emory wrapped up his finest tournament to date with a final-round 69 (-2). The 69 bested his previous career low mark he set in the second round, an even-par 71. The sophomore jumped 21 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 48th.
"I liked the improvement and consistency of Bryce Emory," said Porten. "He made 32 pars in the last 36 holes today, and was bogey free."
Redshirt seniors Tim Kay and Andrew Frame posted scores of one under and one over, respectively, on their way to tying for 23rd. Both posted a cumulative score of 212, good for one-under at the historic par-71 course. It's the first time since the 2008 FirstEnergy Invitational that the Huskies have had multiple players break par for a tournament.
"I was very pleased with the play of Tim Kay," Porten said. "He was two over early in his round and made several birdies to finish."
Senior Jeff Dick maintained his 62nd-place tie after posting a one-over 73 on the afternoon to finish at 219 (+6). Filling out the Huskies' lineup was Griffin Bauman, who carded a one-under 70 in the final round, his lowest score of the event. The sophomore improved nine spots to tie for 72nd.
The Huskies will have a week off before returning to action at Louisville's Cardinal Intercollegiate on Monday, September 20th.
