DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois men’s golf team returns to action this weekend as it travels to Madison, Wis., for the three-day Badger Invitational at the University Ridge Golf Course. The 54-hole event begins on Sunday, Sept. 29, and continues through Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The Huskies are one of 14 teams in the field for the Badger Invitational, joining host Wisconsin as well as Austin Peay, Charleston Southern, Illinois State, Kansas, Marquette, Northern Kentucky, Rutgers, South Carolina, UMKC, USC Upstate, Wofford and Xavier.
“It’s a new golf course for us, a new tournament and a new opportunity for the Huskies to get on track this fall,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “Caulen Coe is going to see his first action in the lineup for the team and he had a good day on the range and in preparation on the course.
“This is a little more of an open golf course than we have played, there is a little more room to miss off the tee, and we feel like that plays a little more into our guys’ game, at least our longer hitters. There are five par fives at University Ridge, all are reachable, four of them with irons, so if we can take advantage of the par fives and get off to a fast start we hope we can get some momentum tomorrow and through to Tuesday.”
The tournament’s first two rounds, Sunday (Sept. 29) and Monday (Sept. 30), will begin with tee times starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday’s (Oct. 1) final 18 holes on the par 72, 7,259-yard course will open with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
NIU will play Sunday’s opening round with Northern Kentucky and Wofford, teeing off on the 10th hole beginning at 9 a.m.
Following their best team round of the season in the final round at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, the Huskies will look to take that momentum to Madison this weekend.
Freshman Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) carded a 75 in the final round at Wolf Run, bettering his score in each round of the tournament. Fillon finished in a team-best tie for 54th last weekend.
Junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC)also posted his best round at Wolf Run in the final round, carding a final round 77. Joining Fillon and White this weekend in the NIU lineup are junior Nick Huggins (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), freshman Jake Curwin (Faribault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) and freshman Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./Nebraska Independent School), making his first appearance in the team lineup this season.
Following this weekend’s event, the Huskies will return to Wisconsin next weekend to compete in the Invitational at Erin Hills, hosted by Marquette University, October 6-8 at Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wis.
