DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University men’s golf team will compete in DePaul’s John Dallio Memorial Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7 at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont, Ill.
Joining NIU and DePaul at Ruffled Feathers will be a contingent of programs from the area. The field includes Chicago State, Columbia, Eastern Illinois, Evansville, UW-Green Bay, IUPUI, Loyola-Chicago, Marquette, Northern Iowa, Oakland, SIUE, Valparaiso, and Western Illinois.
“It was nice to have the time off last week for the Ryder Cup and to get our focus and attention back on the details of playing team golf,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “We are playing a golf course that we don’t know, we hear that it is tight and has lots of water. The conditions are supposed to be cold and windy so that is perfect Huskie golf weather for us to get out of our funk and start playing championship-caliber golf.”
Veterans Griffin Bauman (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) and Nick Schiavi (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) will again play from the top two positions in NIU’s lineup. Bauman, the team’s leader with a 75.3 scoring average over the team’s first three tournaments, is coming off a tie for 12th at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate. The finish was his highest since an 11th-place showing at the FAU Spring Break Championships in March.
Sophomore Nick Schiavi enters this event after a tie for 28th at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, good for the second-best finish on the team behind Bauman. The Barrington native has been among NIU’s top two finishers in each event this season, and boasts a 76.0 scoring average.
Senior Matt Gorman (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) will be making his season debut at Ruffled Feathers. For Gorman, it will be his first event since the FAU Spring Break Championships in March.
Rounding out NIU’s lineup will be Kurtis Luedtke (Aurora, Ill./West) and Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North). Luedtke is making his third start after consecutive ties for 56th this year. Foley will be looking to top his tie for 46th he earned at the Northern Intercollegiate.
The Huskies will be challenging Ruffled Feathers Golf Club, one of the premier courses in Chicagoland. The par 72 track will play to 6,898 yards for this tournament. The course rating checks in at 73.3, making it a formidable foe for NIU.
Teams will play 36 holes Saturday, then a final 18 on Sunday. The forecast is calling for chilling temperatures for each morning, which may result in frost delays. Live scoring for this event will be available on GolfStat.com.
