DEKALB, Ill. – Less than a week after competing in the Badger Invitational, the Northern Illinois men’s golf team returns to the State of Wisconsin for the Erin Hills Intercollegiate this weekend in Erin, Wis. The 54-hole event begins on Sunday, Oct. 6, and will continue through Tuesday, Oct. 8.
“We want to build on the progress we made, especially in the first and third rounds, at Wisconsin,” said NIU head coach Tom Porten. “The freshmen have started to execute in a much more consistent way. We are certainly going to miss Nick Huggins, but that will give Shawn (Foley) a chance to get back in the lineup.
“This is a golf course Shawn has played a half-dozen times, his grandfather lives about 10 minutes from the course; he is familiar with it and has played it pretty well in the past.”
Hosted by Marquette University, the 14-team field at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate features national powerhouses Oklahoma, Oregon State, Stanford, SMU and UCLA, along with programs from around the Midwest including, DePaul, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern and Wisconsin.
“This will be arguably the best field, at least in terms of the top-six teams, that we have ever seen,” said Porten. “Stanford, UCLA, SMU and Oklahoma, are all in the top 10 or 15. But this is what we want to do; we want to play top competition on top courses.”
The event will be the first collegiate tournament played at Erin Hills Golf Course, which will host the 2017 U.S. Open. The par-72, 7,234-yard Erin Hills opened in 2006 and was the site of the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship. Erin Hills was ranked No. 10 on Golf Digest’s latest list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses.”
Senior Shawn Foley (Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha North), returning to the Huskie lineup this week, and junior Liam White (Waukegan, Ill./Carmel Catholic/Indian Hills CC) lead the Huskies into the tournament. They will be joined by a trio of freshmen as Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla./University of Nebraska Independent School), Pierrick Fillon (Voreppe, France/Lycee Pierre Beghin) and Jake Curwin (Fairbault, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary’s) will also get the start at Erin Hills.
Paired with Oregon State and St. John’s, the Huskies will begin the tournament on Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. Live scoring will be available via GolfStat.com.
