DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois' Alex Wagner (St. Charles, Ill./East) was named the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week following his top-20 finish at the Wolverine Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan and played at Mission Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Wagner, who paced the MAC golfers in the tournament field, finished with a three-round score of 236 and finished in a tie for 17th. The junior's fired a 72 in the second round, the best score by a MAC golfer during the event.
"Finishing in the top 20 of that event is a good accomplishment considering the difficulty of the field," said head coach John Cleary. "Alex's 72 was only a handful of scores at par or better in the entire second round against a field mainly comprised of Big Ten and Big 12 golfers."
During the summer, Wagner competed at the U.S. Amateur in San Francisco after a second-place finish at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Oak Grove C.C. in Harvard, Ill. He posted the Huskies' second-best stroke average (75.38) of the fall season.
"Alex's play this summer carried into the fall," said Cleary. "Qualifying for the U.S. Amateur was a big confidence booster and he played pretty well for us this fall. He is dedicated and has worked hard at getting better and improving wherever he can. His performance is a testament to his hard work."
