DEKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois men’s golf coach Tom Porten announced today the signing of Caulen Coe (Gulf Stream, Fla.) and Braden Klaisle (Naperville, Ill.) to National Letters of Intent to join the Huskie golf program for the 2013-14 season.
“It’s great to have a national player like Caulen, who is from a warm weather climate, wanting to come up and play in the Chicago area for Northern while also continuing our trend of building our program from within the state with a local player like Braden,” said Porten. “We really like the upside in both of them, Caulen has a more national presence than Braden but we see them both having an impact immediately as freshmen in the fall.”
Earlier this year, Coe made the cut at the Western Junior, finishing 49th. He also placed ninth at the 2012 AJGA Randy Wise Junior Open. Coe did not play scholastically, as he was homeschooled through the University of Nebraska Independent Study program.
“Caulen is a unique and talented young man who wants has a tremendous upside,” said Porten. “He is our first Florida signee, although Caulen has played all over the country as a junior, and he is looking forward to being an integral part of our program next fall. He has speed to burn, hits it a long way and has been provided an excellent foundation technically from his swing coach, the Golf Channel’s Martin Hall. He has a solid junior record on both the AJGA and FCWT tours and we are very excited to have Caulen as a part of the 2013 Class.”
Klaisle helped Naperville North to a second-place finish in the 2012 Illinois 3A State Tournament. A two-time all-conference honoree, Klaisle also helped Naperville North win a pair of conference and regional championships. Klaisle won five Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) events this past summer and was named the IJGA Senior Boys Player of the Year
“Braden is a solid young player, from nearby Naperville North who played on a very successful high school program,” said Porten. “He is a converted hockey player who is just beginning his journey as a competitive golfer. His experience is mostly regionally on the MAJGT and IJGA tours and has had success competing on both levels. He is technically sound, with good length and a competitive drive that will translate well to college golf. His work ethic is strong coupled with his enthusiastic approach makes for a positive addition to our program.”
