CHICAGO, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's soccer team opened its 2006 exhibition season with a 2-1 victory at DePaul on Tuesday afternoon. Marcus McCarty netted his second goal of the game with a one-timer from the left side in the 83rd minute to give the Huskies the win.
"I thought it was a good preseason start for our team," said head coach Steve Simmons. "All of our players got minutes and we had a chance look at different lineups and to see our new faces in various situations. Our team did well to step up but we still have improvements to make."
McCarty, a junior transfer from the University of Memphis, opened the scoring at the 75-minute mark with a goal on a 15-yard point blank attempt assisted by freshman Brad Bahr.
Less than two minutes after the host Blue Demons knotted the game at one, McCarty answered for the Huskies by finding the back of the net at 83:09 on an assist from Emmanuel Luvert.
NIU used a trio of goalkeepers with Joe Zimka leading the way with 34:14 minutes while Brian VanBuren recorded three saves in just over 25 minutes of work and Matt Corcoran opened the game with 30:14 of time in net.
The Huskies continue their exhibition schedule with another Big East foe, facing Marquette on Saturday afternoon in DeKalb. Also part of Saturday's schedule is the team's annual alumni game at the Huskie Soccer Field.
