MILWAUKEE - The Northern Illinois men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Marquette, Sunday, in the team's final tune-up prior to the regular season.
The Golden Eagles scored off a long throw-in during the 90th minute of play, abbreviating NIU head coach Steve Simmons' hopes of seeing his team for a few extra exhibition minutes.
"I wish the match could've been a bit longer so our guys could get more playing time," Simmons said. "But everybody who could get minutes today got minutes, and that was the aim."
Despite the outcome, Simmons felt that his team put together a positive 90 minutes.
"Overall, I thought it was a really good outing," he said. "We made a lot of good strides since that last time out, and I felt that we had the better chances in this match."
The Huskies open up their season Aug. 31 at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic against Bucknell, another team that made the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
"Bucknell will be a handful," Simmons said, "but we've cemented some things as far as the depth of our roster and the versatility of certain players. That will help us a great deal against them."
NIU kicks the season off at 2 p.m. against the Bison in Evanston, Ill., and will play the second match of the Northwestern Lakeside Classic versus Colgate, Sep. 2 at noon.
