DeKalb, Ill. The Northern Illinois men's soccer team scored a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Drake Bulldogs on Friday (Sept. 8) at Huskie Soccer Field. The contest versus the Bulldogs was NIU's opening match of the adidas /Baymont Inn Invitational.
The win propelled Northern Illinois to a 3-2 record on the year while Drake dropped to 3-2 overall. In Friday's other match at Huskie Soccer Field, Northwestern posted a 2-0 victory over the Bradley Braves.
Junior forward Curt Zastrow (North Freedom, WI/Reedsburg Area) had the Huskies two goals. Earning assists on Zastrow's goals were: junior Marcus McCarty (Fort Worth, Tex./Fossil Ridge), junior Fraser Gibson (Dumbarton, Scotland /Dumbarton Academy) and senior Chris VanDuerm (Wheaton, IL /Wheaton Warrenville South). Gibson assisted on both Zastrow goals, while McCartey earned a helper on the first and VanDuerm on the second.
"You've got to be able to handle momentum, it's very important in soccer," NIU Head Coach Steve Simmons said. "We were able to ride out the momentum and in the end we were victorious because of it."
According to Simmons, teams like Drake like to play long ball and the Huskies just need to keep making strides to step up to that level.
The Huskies out shot Drake in total shots on goal, 7-6, but the Bulldogs held a 12-11 edge in overall attempts.
Northern Illinois goalie Matt Corcoran (Downers, Grove, IL/ North) performed admirably and had six saves for the Huskies.
Northern Illinois is back in action on Sunday (Sept. 10) at Huskie Soccer Field where they will meet the Bradley with a 1:15 pm (CDT) start in the final match of the adidas /Baymont Inn Invitational.
