DeKALB - Senior Luis Mojica scored the first two goals of his career as the Northern Illinois men's soccer team secured its first win of 2010 with a 2-0 shutout victory over Cleveland State, Sunday, in the final match of the NIU adidas/Magnuson Inn Invitational.
Junior Nate DuBois made his first career start, recording two saves while whitewashing the Vikings. His performance in goal helped the Huskies improve to 1-2-1 on the year. Cleveland State fell to 1-3-0.
Mojica put Northern Illinois on the board early as he single-handedly dribbled through the defense and took a shot from the right side. The ball deflected off a CSU defender and into the goal, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the match.
"Luis was our best player all spring, so it makes sense that he would be one of our best players now," said head coach Eric Luzzi, who played 18 players.
"Our strength is in our depth," he said. "To be honest, none of the guys that played looked out of place, so our depth is the strong point of our team."
In addition to DuBois freshman Danny Sassano made his first career start.
"We have really hard decisions every time we pick a starting 11," Luzzi said.
Despite pelting CSU keeper Brad Stuver with 10 shots in the first period, the Huskies held only a one goal lead heading into halftime. NIU also accumulated six first half corner kicks to Cleveland State's one.
In the second half, it would again be Mojica with the golden touch. DuBois lofted a goal kick deep into Cleveland State territory, where a missed header gave Mojica a clear shot at the goal. Mojica took advantage for the first multi-goal game for NIU since Juan Hoyos put in two against Bowling Green in a 3-0 victory on Halloween of 2009. It was the first keeper assist at NIU since Joe Zimka assisted a Brad Horton goal in 2008.
For the match, NIU outshot Cleveland State 15-9 with a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies totaled eight corner kicks to the Vikings' two.
Mojica and junior Finn Jor, who started both matches at defensive midfielder, were named to the all-tournament team.
Northern Illinois returns to action Friday at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic. The Huskies face Holy Cross at 2:30 p.m. NIU will also take on Gonzaga in the tournament, Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
