Seattle, WA-The Northern Illinois men's soccer team claimed a hard fought 1-0 victory over the University of Portland Pilots on Sunday (Sept. 17) at Husky Soccer Field. The contest versus the Pilots was NIU's final match of the Husky Fever Classic.
The win propelled Northern Illinois to a 5-3 record on the year while Portland dropped to 2-1-2 overall.
Junior forward Marcus McCarty (Fort Worth, TX/Fossil Ridge) scored the Huskies only goal in the ninth minute of the first half. Curt Zastrow (North Freedom, WI/ Reedsburg Area) was taken down in the box by a defender. The resulting penalty kick was taken by McCarty to beat Pilot goalie Luis Robles.
"This win today was massive" said head coach Steve Simmons. "I'm so proud of the guys' response to today's match-up after suffering a loss Friday night to Washington. Everyone stepped up to play with their minds and hearts. It really shows that we can compete with anyone in the country."
Northern Illinois goalie Joe Zimka (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) performed admirably and had five saves overall for the Huskies.
Northern Illinois is back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 20) in South Bend, Indiana, where they will meet the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame with a 6 pm (CDT) start. On Sunday (Sept. 24) the Huskies will begin their Mid-American Conference competition meeting IPFW at Huskie Soccer Field at 1 pm (CDT)
