South Bend, IN-The Northern Illinois men's soccer team held the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame scoreless on Wednesday (Sept. 20) in double overtime play.
Northern Illinois is now 5-3-1 on the season while #21 Notre Dame emerged 4-3-2. Notre Dame out shot NIU in total shots on goal 24-7.
Northern Illinois goalie Joe Zimka (Algonquin, IL/ Jacobs) performed admirably and had five saves for the Huskies. Zimka earned the second shutout of his career.
Freshmen outside back Kyle Knotek (Geneva, IL/ Geneva) played extremely well to help the Huskies hold the Fighting Irish.
"I'm just so proud of the boys," NIU Head Coach Steve Simmons said. "Notre Dame is a very good team and is ranked in the top 25. For us to come out of tonight's game with a tie on the road is fantastic."
The Huskies have played their last three games on the road against the University of Washington, University of Portland, as well as Notre Dame and to come out 1-1-1 is commendable.
According to Simmons, he is very pleased with the outcome of the match-up in South Bend. Now the team will be looking forward and focusing on IPFW this weekend.
Northern Illinois will begin their MAC campaign at home on Huskie Soccer Field against IPFW this Sunday, (Sept. 24) at 1 p.m. (CT).
