DeKalb, Ill.- Northern Illinois men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory over the Panthers of UW- Milwaukee on Sunday (Oct. 1) to take home the John Lewang Memorial Cup for the first time in several years.
The win propelled NIU to 8-3-1 on the year while UW- Milwaukee dropped to 3-7-1 overall.
Chris VanDuerm (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton Warrenville South) scored the game's lone goal during overtime play to push the Huskies to victory.
"We are just ecstatic with this win today" said head coach Steve Simmons. "UW- Milwaukee is a good team that was well rested. They [Panthers] always play well on their home field, so for us to come out with the win was huge."
VanDuerm's goal came at 95:57 during overtime play. Luis De La Cerda (Naperville, Ill./ Waubonsie Valley) served up a nice corner kick that was deflected by the goalie and cleared to VanDuerm about 30 yards out. VanDuerm proceeded to rocket the ball into the net for the goal.
Joe Zimka (Algonquin, Ill./ Jacobs) recorded another shutout win in goal while stopping three shots during the match. Zimka earned the fifth consecutive shutout of his career.
NIU continues its road swing to Kalamazoo, MI, to take on the Broncos of Western Michigan slated for 2:00 p.m. ET Friday.
