DeKalb, Ill.- NIU Men's Soccer must have had revenge on their minds Friday afternoon when they shutout the University at Buffalo 3-0 in Semifinal play. The No. 1 seeded Huskies will now face No. 2 seeded Akron for the 2006 MAC Championship. The Zips dominated BGSU 8-2.
NIU was paced offensively by several Huskies. Steve Algozino (Frankfort, Ill./ Lincoln-Way East) scored the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute of play. Algozino's goal was assisted by Luis De La Cerda (Naperville, Ill./ Waubonsie Valley). De la Cerda also had the second netter of the game for the Huskies, assisted by Justin McGrane (Rockford, Ill. Boylan). The final goal of the game was by Marcus McCarty (Fort Worth, Tex./ Fossil Ridge) and helped by Kevin Woerner (Elmhurst, Ill./ York).
McCarty and De la Cerda lead the MAC in scoring with five goals each, while Woerner leads the MAC in assists with four.
Goalkeeper Joe Zimka (Algonquin, Ill./ Jacobs) recorded his ninth shutout on the year in the net. Zimka had seven saves between the pipes for the Huskies and leads the nation in goal-against average.
"Today's game was physical," said head coach Steve Simmons. "We matched Buffalo's intensity and I am proud of the effort our guys played with today and we look forward to battling a good Akron team on Sunday."
NIU dominated the field from a statistical standpoint today as well with 17 shots compatively to UB's 10, as well as with five corner kicks. The Bulls lead the all-time series with NIU 7-6-0.
NIU (13-5-1, 4-1 MAC) is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 3 against Akron (13-4-1, 4-1 MAC) to battle for the MAC Championship. The final game will be broadcasted on Comcast local set to kick-off at 1 p.m. CST.
