DEKALB, Ill. -- Junior Mike Mascitti (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) of the Northern Illinois men’s soccer team was named to the 2011 Men’s Soccer Academic All-MAC Team announced today by the conference office. In addition, seniors Finn Jor (Oslo, Norway/Academy for Elite Athletes) and Pat Sloan (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) earned Academic Honorable Mention recognition.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

"Obviously, I am pleased for Michael, Finn, and Pat,” said NIU head coach Eric Luzzi. “It's not easy to truly excel on the field and in the classroom at the same time.  Certainly our team had a great season on the field, but I am extremely proud of these three guys for being able to also achieve at the highest level in the classroom.  They set the standard for what I would hope all of our players should want to achieve."

Mascitti who appeared in 13 matches in 2011, holds a 3.949 GPA while majoring in applied mathematics and chemistry. He tallied his second career goal in the Huskies’ 3-0 victory over Western Illinois in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Mascitti made his lone start of the season against Marquette in a 1-0 victory on Oct. 4.

Jor earned conference academic honors for the second-straight season and has a 3.424 GPA, majoring in business administration. He appeared in 17 matches, including 16 starts, while recording a pair of assists for the Huskies. Jor assisted on NIU’s first goal in a 2-1 season-opening victory against Saint Louis and also recorded an assist in a 4-0 win over Portland.

Sloan, a finance major with a 3.292 GPA, appeared in 20 matches, making 14 starts. He scored four goals and recorded two assists on the season. All four of Sloan’s goals were game-winners, including in back-to-back games against Oakland and Michigan to help the Huskies claim the Michigan Invitational championship. For his performance in the Michigan Invitational, Sloan earned MAC Player of the Week and College Soccer News National Team of the Week honors.

The Huskies finished the season with a 15-6-0 record, tying the school wins record. NIU won the MAC Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
