DeKALB – The Northern Illinois men’s soccer team will host Wisconsin-Green Bay, April 18, for its annual Alumni Day, highlighting the 2009 spring schedule, head coach Steve Simmons announced Tuesday.

Festivities start at noon for the annual alumni game, which offers the opportunity for former men’s soccer players to come back to DeKalb and connect with the program. The day culminates when the Huskies face the Phoenix at 2 p.m.

“We’re very excited to have UW-Green Bay coming to DeKalb for our Alumni Day,” head coach Steve Simmons said. “They are a very good team, and our games against them have always been tough.”

The Huskies open the spring season with a home match against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, March 29 at 1 p.m. The teams tied during the fall in the annual battle for the LeWang Cup.

NIU then travels to Western Illinois, April 4, to face two of their in-state rivals for the Governor’s Cup. The Huskies take on Eastern Illinois at noon, followed by the winner of a battle between WIU and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 2 p.m.

“Sometimes it can be difficult for a spring game to have the same feel as a match in the fall, but the Governor's Cup games do feel like a fall game because there is a cup on the line,” Simmons said. “We had held it for a few years, then lost it last year, so I know the guys will be looking forward to the opportunity to bring the Cup back to DeKalb.”

Northern Illinois returns home for a triangular with Bradley and 2006 Junior College National Champion Jefferson College, April 10. The Huskies open the event against Jefferson at 3:30 p.m.

“The triangular will be a great chance to play against two very different teams,” Simmons said. “Bradley is one of the most athletic and hard working teams in the nation.  They come to play every single time they take the field, and we know it will be a big time battle.  Jefferson College from near St. Louis is one of the top junior college teams in the country.  They produce numerous players each year who go on to Division I schools all over the country.”

All NIU soccer matches offer free admission, and are held at the Northern Illinois Track & Field and Soccer Complex, just west of Huskie Stadium.
