Soccer Caps Spring Exhibitions, Finishes Third At Illinois Governor's
MACOMB, IL -
Northern Illinois University's men's soccer squad capped its spring
exhibition season taking third place in the Illinois Governor's
Cup hosted by Western Illinois University.
NIU began the day falling short in a tense 1-0 battle with 2004
NCAA Division II runner-up Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
That result means that both losses in the Huskies' 5-2-5 spring
season were by 1-0 tallies with the other being part of a 2-1 weekend
at the University of Notre Dame with the host Irish earning that
1-0 triumph over Northern Illinois.
On Saturday, coach Steve Simmons' club was looking for a weekend
when Chris Rufa set up Brandon Parrish for a go-ahead with 10 minutes
left in regulation. The host Leathernecks, an NCAA tournament participant
in 2004, got the equalizer with less than five minutes to play.
But instead of a penalty-kick shootout, Northern Illinois gained
the victory thanks to a Fraser Gibson goal off a Parrish assist
just prior to stoppage time.
"Coming off such a great showing at Notre Dame, I think we
mentally took the foot off the gas pedal against SIU-E because they're
not a Division I side. Unfortunately, they're too good a team not
to take advantage of the opportunity we gave them," Simmons
noted. "I thought every team was challenged that day by conditions.
In addition to being cold, windy and wet, we were playing on a un-mowed
practice field that made really slowed things down.
"I thought several of our players adjusted well and gave a
good effort. Kevin Woerner simply had a tremendous work rate considering
the conditions. He played very well against Western. The whole spring
season was a very productive one. Everybody got six or more games
under their belt and that experience is going to help us this fall,"
Northern Illinois' soccer players report back to campus on August
14 and have tentatively scheduled their Cardinal and Black intra-squad
scrimmage for Monday, August 15. The Huskie Alumni weekend, planned
for August 19-20, will include a golf outing and a series of scrimmages
featuring alums and the current team along with an exhibition opponent
for the Huskies to be named.
