Northern Illinois Men's Soccer Opens Season With 2-1 Victory

Evanston, IL— Northern Illinois University men's soccer team opened the 2005 campaign with a win in Evanston, IL. defeating St. Francis (Pa.) 2-1, and snapped a five year season-opener losing streak.

"Today our forwards were in form and that was very good to see," said assistant coach Ian Clerihew.

The Huskies were fueled by an early goal from junior Kevin Woerner on a pass from fellow junior Justin McGrane at the 15:50 mark. The Huskies would have more scoring opportunities in the first half taking seven shots, but they would not be able to capitalize on another opportunity in the half.

The Huskies did not ease up. Sophomore Curt Zastrow knocked in NIU's second goal in the 63rd minute. Zastrow, a MAC First Team honoree last season looks as if he has not lost a step this season. Northern Illinois out shot St. Francis 12-4 for the game.

SFU scored its only goal in the 75th minute on a shot by Scott Thompson. The goal brought St. Francis within one, but they were never able to muster another good scoring opportunity.

The Huskies defense was solid allowing only two shots on goal and only three corner kicks. The strong play by the Huskie defense will provide excellent balance to a talented offensive team.

NIU will be back in action on Sunday September 4, 2005 in Evanston, IL when they take on Western Kentucky. Kickoff is 12 pm in Evanston.
