DeKalb, Ill. DeKalb, Ill.- The Northern Illinois men's soccer team claimed a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Bradley Braves on Sunday (Sept. 10) at Huskie Soccer Field. The contest versus the Braves was NIU's final match of the adidas/ Baymont Inn Invitational.
The win propelled Northern Illinois to a 4-2 record on the year while Bradley dropped to 1-2-1 overall. In Sunday's other match at Huskie Soccer Field, Northwestern posted a 2-1 victory over the Drake Bulldogs.
Junior forward Marcus McCarty (Fort Worth, TX/Fossil Ridge) scored the Huskies only goal with 23 minutes remaining in the first half. His goal was unassisted. He took a pass from a defender and dribbled from 22 yards out to shot and beat the goalkeeper.
"This game was very close and similar to our match up with them [Bradley] in Peoria last year," NIU Head Coach Steve Simmons said. "The only difference is this year we beat them and last year they beat us."
The Braves out shot Northern Illinois 17-8 and led in overall attempts, 7-6. But Bradley's shots came from outside the goal area.
Northern Illinois goalie Matt Corcoran (Downers Grove, IL/North) performed admirably and had 7 saves overall for the Huskies; including an unbelievably well-timed save on a Bradley penalty kick. This is Corcoran's third shutout of the year and fifth in his career.
Three Huskie players were named to the adidas/ Baymont Inn Invitational All-Tournament team. They were Marcus McCarty, Curt Zastrow and Matt Corcoran.
