Northern Illinois Men's Soccer Moves Up To Sixth In NCAA Division I Midwest Region Rankings

DeKalb, IL — Having added two more victories over the weekend to improve to 3-0-1, the Northern Illinois University men’s soccer program earned a little more respect as the Huskies jumped two spots to a No. 6 ranking in the latest NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Ratings released Tuesday (Sept. 13).

Northern Illinois climbed from last week’s No. 8 rating to No. 6 in the weekly balloting done by the region’s coaches. Missouri State University (formerly known as Southwest Missouri State University) is No. 1 with Creighton University in the second spot. Rounding out the top five are the University of Memphis, Bradley University and the University of Illinois-Chicago.

The Huskies lead off the second five with NIU followed in order by Southern Methodist University, Oral Roberts University, Saint Louis University, and the University of Tulsa.

“We’re certainly in some really good company. When you mention Saint Louis, Creighton, SMU and so on, you’re talking about some very good, tradition-rich soccer programs,” NIU coach Steve Simmons said. “We were in the Top 10 of the Midwest last year and we realize that it’s an indication of how hard our guys have worked to get respect. The key question is how we handle it.

Northern Illinois serves as host to the adidas / Baymont Inn Invitational this weekend with action beginning on Friday at 2:15 p.m. when Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) takes on the University of Detroit-Mercy. Then at 4:30 p.m., NIU welcomes Big Ten Conference rep Northwestern University in the tourney’s second game.

Sunday’s final day of play is part of a tripleheader at Huskie Soccer Field. Northwestern and IUPUI meet at 11 a.m. with Northern Illinois and Detroit-Mercy squaring off at 1:15 p.m. The NIU women’s soccer squad completes the day with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference clash against Illinois State University.
