CURT ZASTROW PLUNGES DAGGER INTO BADGER HOPES
DeKALB, IL- Freshman Curt Zastrow (North Freedom, WI / Reedsburg
Area) made his way through the Badger defense to bump home his third
goal of the season, handing Northern Illinois a 1-0 win over the
University of Wisconsin. The victory is the Huskies sixth consecutive
and seventh of the last eight matches, bumping their overall mark
to 7-3. Wisconsin heads into the Big Ten Conference schedule with
a 3-5 mark.
"This is a big, big win," Huskie head coach Steve Simmons
said. "Our guys battled hard, showed good intensity, and they
are very pleased with the result."
The majority of the first half was played in the midfield, with
NIU putting three shots on goal, while the Badgers forced Steve
Goletz (Downers Grove / South) to corral just one shot.
In the second half, Wisconsin picked up the intensity putting five
shots on net, but it was NIU's only shot on net in the second half
that did the Badgers in. Zastrow took the ball at midfield and meticulously
picked his way through the Badger defense. Once he was one-on-one
with Wisconsin keeper Eric Hanson, Zastrow threw one last fake,
which dropped Hanson to the ground, leaving Zastrow uncontested
to score at 85:21.
Goletz earned his second shutout of the season, giving Northern
Illinois four shutouts in ten games. It is also the first time NIU
has beaten a Big Ten Conference school since defeating Wisconsin
3-2 in 2001.
"Today was a day where, as a coach you are glad to have deep
talent," Simmons added. The Huskies were without the services
of senior Andy Champion (Peoria / Notre Dame) and Fraser
Gibson (Dumbarton, Scotland / Dumbarton Academy) due to injury
and illness, while Mike Corvo (Downers Grove / North) went
down with a leg injury late in the game. Simmons stated that Champion
should be available against Marshall (on Sunday), while Gibson's
and Corvo's status is uncertain.
"We brought our 'A' game today," Simmons stated. "This
is what you have to do, you have to beat this kind of team to get
into the tournament and to advance in the tournament and our guys
Northern Illinois kicks off the final month of the season on Sunday
(October 3) when they travel to Marshall University. Play begins
