CLEVELAND -- Senior Mike Mascitti (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) of the Northern Illinois men’s soccer team was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Thursday.

Last weekend in the MAC Tournament, Mascitti played the full 90 minutes in both NIU’s semifinal victory over third-seeded West Virginia and the championship game against top-ranked Akron. Mascitti helped the Huskie defense record its ninth shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over West Virginia in the semifinals as NIU advanced to the conference championship game for the second consecutive season.

Against Akron in the championship game, the Huskies held the Zips scoreless for 72 minutes before Akron earned a 2-0 victory. For his play on the weekend, Mascitti was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.

Mascitti, a senior Applied Mathematics and Biochemistry major, has a 3.722 grade point average. He is the second Huskies, joining MacKenzie Roddy of the NIU volleyball team, to earn MAC Scholar-Athlete honors this year.
