DeKalb, Ill.- Northern Illinois men's soccer forward Marcus McCarty was named to the All-Great Lakes Third Team. This is the junior's fifth honor on the year and the Huskies first regional honor since Peter Agrimson was awarded All-Midwest First Team in 2000.
"I'm pleased for Marcus's Great Lakes All-Region honor," said head coach Steve Simmons. "To earn an honor of this nature in this region is quite an accomplishment considering the elite programs that reside in the Great Lakes. Once again, his honor and others awarded to him and his teammates are a reflection of the NIU Soccer group effort this season."
McCarty had a stellar campaign with the Huskies this year and for his efforts he has been awarded: the Mid-American Conference Newcomer of the Year, All-MAC First Team, All-MAC Tournament Team, MAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week, as well as, the All-Great Lakes Third Team accolade. Furthermore, McCarty is atop the Mid-American Conference leader board in several categories including: No. 1 in points (26), points per game, goals (11), goals per game, game-winning goals (7) and No. 3 in shots (50) and shots per game.
"Marcus scored some big goals in big games this season," said head coach Steve Simmons. "When matches are tight, like in a majority of NCAA Division 1 top 20 contests, you may only get a few looks on goal. He did well to take his chances.
It's more impressive when you take into account he was adjusting to his new teammates [McCarty is a junior- transfer from Memphis]."
The Huskies finished the season with a 15-6-1 record, which were the most wins in the programs history. Furthermore, the Huskies won the MAC regular season title, the MAC Championship Tournament and a No. 19 national ranking.
