ROCKFORD, Ill. - At the Boylan Tennis Center on Friday evening, the Huskies took on the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars in their seventh match of the season. Earlier in the day, the women beat the Cougars 4-3, and the men followed suit in the evening cap, winning 6-1 and improving the team's record 6-1 on the season.
"Today we came out and set the tone early in doubles," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher. "Even though Lynch struggled in singles, it was great to get him back in there."
The Huskies were dominant throughout this match. They started off the affair with a strong performance in doubles play, taking all three matches to secure the point. Axel Lagerlof and Dor Amir maintained their perfect doubles record 2014, which now sits at 7-0, with a 6-2 win against Cougars Nico Kuehn and Nico Washuta.
NIU continued to run the show in singles play, taking five of the six matches. A recurring theme this season, Simon Formont and Frederic Cadieux both turned in wins at the event. Cadieux played Matthew Hutchinson in the No. 2 and won 6-2, 6-0. Formont faced Jacob Perkins and turned in a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Neither player has been beaten in singles play yet this season as both currently sport a 7-0 record.
Matt Lynch returned to singles play for the first time since NIU's match at Drake on January 17, and he picked up his first victory of the season with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win over Patrick Gaffigan.
Next up for NIU is the second road match of the season for the team. The Huskies will head to Indiana for a match on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
