DeKALB, Ill. - Looking to avenge its loss in the Mid-American Conference Tournament last season, the Northern Illinois men's tennis team hosted Western Michigan Friday morning at Boylan Tennis Center. Though they battled the Broncos (15-7, 1-0 MAC) hard, the Huskies (12-6, 1-1 MAC) were unable to pull off the victory as they fell to WMU, 5-2.

"Today it just seemed like Western Michigan was just a little bit better than us at every position accept two spots. This was a tough match to play without Axel, our best player, but you know I asked the guys to step up in doubles having to change our doubles combinations and we almost pulled it off," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher. "Next week will be big too. We play Ball State and they were picked to finish ahead of us, they always have a great team. We're just hoping to be able to find a way into the match next week."

Without one of its top players the last two matches, Axel Lagerlof, the Huskies have been forced to move their players up in the lineup and adjust the doubles lineups. No. 2 doubles Dor Amir and Simon Formont teamed up to claim victory on the day, 8-6, but the Huskies were unable to get another doubles win, despite the best efforts of Max Phillips and Jovan Zeljkovic at No. 3, 9-8 (6).

In singles play, Frederic Cadieux earned NIU's first point of the match with 6-4, 6-4, victory over former Huskie Ross VanderPloeg at No. 2. The win by Cadieux extended his winning streak to eight-straight matches, one shy of his season-long of nine. Northern Illinois' final point of the match was taken at No. 4, with Jovan Zeljkovic staking claim in a three-set victory over Ruben Greiner, 7-6, 2-6, 10-8.

The win by Zeljkovic snapped a five-match winless streak for the junior and marked his first win of the season at the No. 4 position.

NIU will return to action next weekend when it heads to Ball State and IPFW April 6 and 7, respectively.
