Des Moines, Iowa –  First-year Northern Illinois head men’s tennis coach Pawel Gajdzik opened his career in fine fashion as he saw his doubles tandem of sophomore Matt Hansen (Topeka, Kan./Miami Online (FL)) and freshman Ross VanderPloeg (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) advance to the semifinals of the Drake Men’s Tennis Fall Invitational at the Drake Tennis Center on Friday evening. 

Hansen and VanderPloeg opened the night with a 8-3 win over Creighton’s Michael Elson and James McAvoy and concluded the evening with a 9-7 triumph over Drake’s Guilherme Marsiglia and Konrad Kamizelich. They will be back in action  at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening to square off with Drake’s Ivan Mendoza and Ricardo Lau for the right to advance to the championship.


Second-day action of the Drake Invitational begins early on Saturday morning.
