Des Moines, Iowa - You can call Northern Illinois Head Men's Tennis Coach Pontus Hiort greedy, but at the same time, he's a very practical individual.
The Huskies captured the doubles title, as well as a pair of runner-up finishes in both the A and B flights to round out action at the Drake Fall Invitational on Sunday.
"We had a pretty good weekend," Hiort said of his team's performance. "I was pleased with how we played. It's too bad we didn't get the A or B flight titles. I was a bit disappointed, but at the same time I see the big picture with the improvements that we have made."
The NIU tandem of junior Alex Friesen (Vancouver, BC) and sophomore Brian Livingston (Skokie, Ill.) shared the doubles title with teammates Adam Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Diego Zegarra-Ballon (Lima, Peru).
Livingston advanced to the A Flight finals by virtue of his 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Eastern Illinois' Chuck Levaque. The Skokie, Ill., native, however, was dropped in the championship match by Drake's Sergi Vila, 6-2, 6-4.
Zegarra-Ballon moved on to the B Flight finals following his 6-0, 6-2 win over Creighton's Mike Elson. He was not as successful in the championship match, as Drake's Ricardo Lau earned the 6-4, 6-0 victory over the Peru native.
The Huskies will take a two-week hiatus before returning to the courts on October 13 for the three-day Marquette Invitational.
