NIU Men's Tennis Enjoys Solid Outing At Marquette Fall Invitational
Oct. 6, 2007
Milwaukee, Wis. - Northern Illinois juniors Jimmy Chu (Lima, Peru / San Augustin) and Alfonso Monroy (Mexico City, Mexico / Colegio Aleman) are each still alive for a pair of titles at the Marquette Fall Men's Tennis Invitational on Friday afternoon. Chu advanced to the semifinals of Flight "B" with victories over UW-Green Bay's Matt Clegg (6-4, 6-3) and Marquette's Brett Binkley (7-6, 3-6, 10-5). He also paired up with senior Alex Friesen (Vancouver, B.C. / Burnaby Central) to earn an 8-4 win over UW-Green Bay's Tim Prudlow and Mark Goldin, advancing the duo to the Flight "A" doubles quarterfinals. Monroy, the No. 1 seed in Flight "C", cruised past UWGB's Mike Wesley with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph, putting him in the semifinals. Monroy later paired up with senior Diego Zegarra-Ballon (Lima, Peru / Markham College Prep) in Flight "B" doubles action and blanked IUPUI's Dean Guyer and Blake Powers, 8-0, to advance to the semifinals. "I thought we had a pretty good day," NIU men's tennis coach Pontus Hiort said. "We were still too up and down and we need to be more even across the lineup. "We still have some guys out in the singles and doubles draw which is nice to see," Hiort continued. "I'm hoping tomorrow we'll be more consistent and even keeled and take advantage of our opportunities." Huskie junior Brian Livingston (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) tallied a pair of victories over Butler's Bryce Warren (6-3, 6-2) and Marquette's Mark Rutherford (6-4, 6-0) moving him on to the semifinals of Flight "A" singles action.
