NIU's Monroy Seeks Flight "C" Title At MU's Fall Men's Tennis Invite
Oct. 6, 2007
Milwaukee, Wis. - Northern Illinois junior Alfonso Monroy (Mexico City, Mexico / Colegio Aleman) picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Chicago State's Abram Mamahit to advance to the Flight "C" finals of the Marquette Fall Men's Tennis Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Monroy will face Marquette's Greg Sirotek in the championship at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. The Mexico City native fell short in his bid for the Flight "B" doubles title as he and teammate Diego Zegarra-Ballon (Lima, Peru / Markham College Prep) were defeated by UW-Green Bay's Brian Zaron and John Brough, 8-6 in the championship. Earlier in the afternoon, Monroy and Zegarra-Ballon defeated UWGB's Eric Plaushines and Mike Wesley, 8-4, in the semifinals. "Alfonso played real well," NIU head men's tennis coach Pontus Hiort said. "It's good to see that he made the finals. He was consistent all day today and he played aggressively when he need to." All results for the weekend can be found at www.edraws.com/marquette. --NIU--
