SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Northern Illinois men's tennis closed the Tom Fallon Invitational Sunday with six singles matches and doubles match, finishing 3-3 and 0-1 respectively on the final day. On the previous day, the Huskies started slow in singles (0-6) but finished red hot in doubles (5-1) to end day two.

Between the Crimson Tide and the Fighting Irish on Saturday morning, the Huskies were winless. Axel Lagerlof and Max Phillips didn't go down without a fight as they took their matches to three sets before falling.

In the afternoon versua Alabama and Michigan State with its back against the ropes, NIU found its second wind and five matches against pairs from the nationally ranked programs from 2012.The only blemish in the afternoon was Jovon Zeljkovich teaming with Dor Amir and fell to MSU's Bogaton and Jadon, 8-2.

Following Saturday's competition, Head Coach Patrick said "Today was a humbling day for us. We went 0-6 in singles against Alabama and Notre Dame, But the second half of the day was a completely different story. We went 5-1 in doubles against MSU, ND and Bama. Our goal tomorrow is to leave with an overall winning record. That would be a great accomplishment against Michigan, MSU, ND and Bama."

On Sunday Northern Illinois only played one doubles match, where Axel Lagerlof and Simon Formont teamed up against the Spartans Richmond and Heederm but fell 8-2.

In singles however, the Huskies were an even 3-3 with wins by Lagerlof, Amir and Zeljkovic. Amir earned a big 6-2, 6-3 win over Notre Dame's Ryan Bandy, while Lagerlof grinded out a 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 result over Fighting Irish Alex Lawson. Zelkovich, like Lagerlof, had to grind out a three set win and did so against UND's Ken Sabacinski, 4-6, 6-1, 10-4.

Amir was named to the all-tournament for his play over the weekend, where he finished 2-1 in singles and was 1-1 in doubles. Alabama, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame were all nationally ranked teams in 2012.

Northern Illinois will close its fall season at the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Michigan State, starting Oct. 18.
