COLUMBUS, Ohio - NIU began its last men's tennis event of the fall season on Thursday, the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Ohio State University. The first day of the regional tournament had competitors start to fight for spots in the Singles Main Draw in a qualifying draw. 64 players from 21 different institutions were playing the qualifying draw, including five NIU players. Through the two rounds, Frederic Cadieux and Matt Lynch have advanced to the round of 16.
The first round of the qualifying draw was eliminated two Huskies from singles play in the tournament. Jovan Zeljkovic dropped his first match to Mark Singnil (Toledo) in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Simon Formont also fell in his first match, his being to Alexander Raa (UIC), 6-3, 7-5. Carlos Manzanas was able to best Mario Noboa 6-3, 6-4 in his opening match to advance to the second round with teammates Lynch and Cadieux.
In the second round, Manzanas ended up dropping his match against Sten Leusink (DePaul) 6-2, 7-5. Cadieux was able to take his match without much resistance, defeating Michael Savaglio (Valparaiso) 6-1, 6-1. Lynch was also able to win, his coming against Rafael Orantes (Detroit), 6-1, 6-2.
On Friday, October 18, the qualifying draw will be completed. Just one more round is remaining for this bracket. The winners in the round of 16 will gain admittance into the Singles Main Draw. The Singles Main Draw will begin in the early afternoon at 12:15 p.m.. NIU could potentially have four players in the draw with Dor Amir and Axel Lagerlof already slotted into the bracket. Doubles play will also begin on Friday, set to start at 4:30 p.m.
