COLUMBUS, Ohio - The second day of the Midwest Regional in men's tennis is in the books. On the Varsity Tennis Courts of Ohio State University, the 21 attending institutions began the main draws the event, both in singles and doubles. Most successful on this day for NIU was Axel Lagerlof, who won his first match in the Main Singles Draw and teamed up with Dor Amir to claim a first-round victory in the Doubles Main Draw.
Starting off the day was the final round of the Singles Qualifying Draw. Frederic Cadieux earned a spot in the Singles Main Draw by beating Muddappa Appanervanda (Illinois State) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Matt Lynch also played a qualifying match, but he came up short against Eric Schnurrenberger (Notre Dame), dropping the match 6-1, 6-3.
Next up was the first round of the Singles Main Draw. Lagerlof advanced to the Round of 32 after beating Dave Bacalla (Valparaiso) in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. To get to the Round of 16, he will need to get through top-seeded Peter Kobelt (Ohio State), who is ranked third in the nation as a singles player by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Lagerlof was the only Huskie to advance.
Dor Amir played a match in the singles draw, but he suffered a defeat against fifth-seeded Quentin Monaghan (Notre Dame), 6-1, 6-0. Cadieux, fresh off his win in the qualifier, took on 14th-seeded Ross Guignon (Illinois State), but he dropped the match straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
To close out the day, the Doubles Main Draw got started. Two Huskie teams advanced to the Round of 32. Jovan Zeljkovic and Matt Lynch were given a first-round bye, and they'll take on Shaun Bernstein/Alex Buzzi (Michigan) in a second round match on Saturday, October 19. Lagerlof and Amir won their first doubles match against Alexander Raa/Alan Reifer (UIC), 8-5. They're set to take on Alex Petrone/Michael Zhu (Michigan) in the second round. Simon Formont and Carlos Manzanas also competed together, but they were not as successful as their teammates. The duo dropped the opening match against Elliot Sprecher/Jakhongir Jalalov (Wisconsin), 8-5.
Lagerlof's match will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. Should he advance, he'll play a match in the Round of 16 at 1 p.m. Doubles play will start back up at 4:30 p.m. If either or both of the NIU teams advance, they'll play another match at 7:15 p.m.
