COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Huskies and rest of the field in attendance of the Midwest Regional in men's tennis have completed the third day of the event. After the events on Saturday, the main draws in both singles and doubles are now down to the final eight. However, none of the Huskies will be involved for the remainder of the regional tournament. NIU had some tight matches on Saturday, but no one was able to advance.
The first match of day that involved a Huskie was Axel Lagerlof's singles match against top-seeded Peter Kobelt (Ohio State). Lagerlof almost took the first set, but he fell just short. He ended up falling in the match in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. With this defeat, Lagerlof is eliminated from the Singles Main Draw, and no other Huskies remain.
Later in the day, in the doubles draw, Lagerlof played alongside Dor Amir and took on Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu (Michigan). It was another long and tight match, but the two from NIU fell just short, losing 8-7. Jovan Zeljkovic and Matt Lynch were also competing together, facing Shaun Beinstein and Alex Buzzi (Michigan). The Huskies in this match failed to come away with a victory as well, falling 8-5.
"As a team, this was by far our best tournament in terms of how we played," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher. "I am really happy for Axel and Fred. They had been struggling with their singles games, but they picked it up this tournament, no doubt. To add, Matt Lynch has had about as good of a fall season as we could ask for out of a freshman. I think he has really come in and played at a very high level in singles and doubles. I'm looking forward to the spring. We're playing a big time schedule this year, the toughest we've ever played at NIU."
With that, the fall season is over for the men's tennis team. The Huskies will get back on the courts for an official event on January 17 when they travel to Drake University for the spring matchup.
