DeKALB, Ill. - The Huskies are hosting a doubleheader on Friday, January 24 for the first men's tennis home matches of the season. At the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill. NIU will face IPFW at 1:00 p.m. and Chicago State at 5:00 p.m.
Last time out, NIU traveled to No. 30 Drake University for the first men's tennis match of the season. While the Huskies fell 4-3, the event showed some of the potential of this current NIU team. Frederic Cadieux defeated No. 123 Matt Frost in the No. 3 match. Dor Amir and Axel Lagerlof teamed up to defeat No. 8 Ravi Patel and Ryan Goodman. With these strong individual starts, the Huskies will look to put together some victories as a team.
NIU will take on IPFW to start on Friday, a team that is coming off a 5-2 loss against Ball State to begin the season. The Mastodons are led by head coach Eric Burns, who is coaching the team for a 12th season. Last year, he led the team to a 9-17 record. When the Huskies and Mastodons met in 2013, NIU took a narrow victory, 4-3.
After the match with IPFW, Chicago State will join the home team on the courts. The Cougars are 0-2 on the young season after losing to Northwestern and Western Michigan last weekend. They're led by four-year coach Jack Barton. These two teams played in 2013, a match which NIU won, 7-0. Chicago State is looking to rebound from a tough season in 2013, when the team went 1-22.
A newcomer to the Cougars aims to help them achieve improvement this season. Former NIU men's tennis player and assistant coach Javier Bernabe is the latest addition to the Chicago State coaching staff. Bernabe coached for three seasons (Fall 2010 to Spring 2013) and played for four seasons (Fall 2006 to Spring 2010) at NIU.
Following the completion of the doubleheader on Friday, the Huskies will have exactly one week to prepare for a home match against Southern Illinois on Friday, January 31. It will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
