DeKALB, Ill. - The Huskies (5-1) have a pair of matches to attend this weekend. On Friday, February 7, NIU will host SIU-Edwardsville at the Boylan Tennis Courts in Rockford, Ill. The match will begin at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, February 9 the Huskies will get back on the road after having played six straight home games previously. They'll face Indiana in the institution's IU Tennis Center at 4:00 p.m.
Last weekend, NIU took on three opponents over two days, outscoring them by a combined 20-1. They defeated Detroit, Southern Illinois, and UW-Whitewater, improving the team's record to 5-1 this season. The Huskies have yet to be beaten at home thus far, boasting a 5-0 record in such affairs.
SIU-Edwardsville (2-1) has been steadily improving over the last few years. Head Coach Jason Coomer took over in 2010, and he has helped increase the team's win totals from one in 2011 to six in 2012 and eight in 2013. Not only does Coomer coach the team, he is also the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs at SIU-Edwardsville. Coomer coaches the school's women's tennis team as well.
Indiana (2-4) has had a bit of a rough start to begin the 2014 season, but this is not a team to be taken lightly. The Hoosiers haven't produced a sub-.500 record since 2009, and in 2011 and 2012, they won over 20 matches. Head Coach Randy Bloemendaal is with the team for a fourth season, and he has been coaching for over 16 years now. Bloemendaal is a six-time Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and a three-time ITA Coach of the Year.
Following the completion of Sunday's match, the Huskies will have until Friday, February 14 to prepare for a match at Iowa. The Huskies will face the Hawkeyes at 6:00 p.m.
