Wisconsin-Green Bay Final Results
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Friday at the Boylan Tennis Center. The Huskies defeated Western Illinois, 5-2, in their first match of the day before falling in the nightcap to Wisconsin-Green Bay, 5-2.
NIU fell behind in the doubles against WIU, dropping a pair of tight matches 8-6 at flights one and three. The Huskies lost an even closer match in flight two where Axel Lagerlof and Bryant Poggensee-Wei played to an 8-8 deadlock with Franciso Ortiz and Mandela Shepard before losting 9-8, 7-2 in the tiebreaker.
Northern Illinois rebounded in singles however, taking five of six matches. Maksym Bartiuk and Axel Lagerlof earned dominating victories at number two and three. Bartiuk claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory in flight two, while Lagerlof was a 6-0, 6-2 winner in flight three. Maksym Lagutin and Maximilian Phillips also won in straight-sets. Lagutin scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory t number five while Phillips earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at number six.
NIU's fifth singles victory was a three-set triumph by Roman Turtygin at number one. Turtygin defeated Jeff Cote, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
In the second match of the day, NIU fell to a fresh Wisconsin-Green Bay squad, 5-2.
The Phoenix took all three doubles matches, with Bartiuk and Lagutin nearly pulling off a victory, falling 8-7 at number two.
In singles play, Lagerlof earned his second win of the day in a three-set match at flight three. Laferlof dropped the first set, 4-6, before coming back to win the final two sets, 7-5, 7-6 (2). Lagutin also won his second singles match of the day in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-1.
NIU returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 13, when it hosts Illinois State at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill. The match against the Redbirds will follow the NIU women's match against Southern Illinois that will begin at 1 p.m.
