DeKALB, Ill. - The new Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings are out, and NIU's Dor Amir and Axel Lagerlof have played their way to a top 60 ranking in doubles. The duo is 7-1 this season in doubles matches. Due to their excellent play in the young 2014 season, they find themselves ranked 37th in the nation in doubles play.
"This is great for everyone involved," said Head Coach Patrick Fisher. "These guys have worked very hard and deserve all the recognition they get. It also helps our program, letting people know we have a good team here."
Amir and Lagerlof set up this ranking in NIU's first match of the season. At Drake on Friday, January 17, the pairing faced the then eighth-ranked doubles team in the nation in the No. 1, Robin Goodman and Ravi Patel. Not only did the NIU tandem win, but this doubles match had the largest margin of victory during the affair, as Lagerlof and Amir won 6-3.
Since then, the two have been nearly flawless in their matches. They started the season with seven wins in a row, all coming in No. 1 doubles matches. With just one loss on the ledger through eight matches, Lagerlof and Amir will be look to continue the climb on the rankings list.
The Huskies will play a pair of matches this weekend. On Friday, they'll head to Iowa for a match at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday, NIU returns home for a match against IUPUI at 10:00 a.m.
