DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team springs into action this weekend as it takes on Ivy League opponent Brown at Boylan Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The match will begin at 4 p.m. The Huskies are bidding for their 11th win this season against the Bears.
NIU finished last weekend 2-1 when it defeated Southern Illinois and Eastern Illinois on Saturday, 7-0. In both matches the Huskies made a clean sweep in singles and won two of three doubles matches to take the point. The doubleheader win wrapped up Northern Illinois' ninth and 10th wins of the season, marking the third-consecutive season the Huskies have won 10 or more contests.
Northern Illinois closed the weekend with a match at Wisconsin, the Huskies first road contest since Feb. 12. NIU lost the doubles point to UW, but Mikhail Titov prevented the sweep by the Badgers as he won at No. 5, 6-2, 7-5. The Huskies lost to Wisconsin in Madison, 6-1.
After his 3-1 weekend on the court, Titov was named the Mid-American Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week. The native of Russia's only blemish occurred in doubles with partner Maximilian Phillips at Wisconsin, dropping the contest, 8-4.
Brown carries a No. 68 ranking by the ITA and a 9-3 record this duel season. The Bears have been out of action since Feb. 24, when they defeated Boston College, 6-1. Previous to the match against the Eagles, Brown reached the ECAC Indoor Championship where they fell to No. 60 Harvard, 4-1, after reaching the championship with a 5-1 win over No. 50 Cornell. The Bears opened the season with a 5-2 win over Buffalo.
The Huskies will return to action March 12 and head to Florida for their annual spring trip to take on North Central College and Quinnipiac.
