DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men’s tennis team returns to action at Southern Illinois Sunday after a sunny and victorious spring break in the Sunshine state where it finished 3-1. The Huskies (11-5) and the Salukis (8-2) will begin their contest at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
NIU opened its break with a huge win at Marquette, the first victory over the Golden Eagles since 2002. The Huskies clinched the doubles title after taking the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Dor Amir and Frederic Cadiuex would go undefeated in the contest after winning their singles matches. With a final win from Simon Formont at the No. 6 spot, the Huskies would prevail 4-3 against the Golden Eagles.
Although, NIU’s winning streak would cease in the opening of a three-match trip in Florida with a loss to Stetson, 5-2, the Huskies would come out victorious closing the last two matches with wins against both Appalachian State, 4-3, and the Army, 4-2. Axel Lagerlof and Cadieux went undefeated in all three meets in the singles competition.
The Huskies look to build on their 11-5 record on when they take on Southern Illinois. Following the match versus SIU, Northern Illinois will jump into the Mid-American Conference play with matches against Western Michigan (March 29) and Ball State (April 6).
The Salukis own an 8-2 record this season and are currently riding a six-match unbeaten streak, where they have only surrendered five points in that span (Feb. 23-present). At the bottom of the lineup, Martijn Admiraal has been force as he sports an undefeated record of 8-0 this spring. In doubles, Southern Illinois has remained consistent with six wins overall at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions.
Northern Illinois will return to action March 29 when it hosts Western Michigan in its final home match of the regular season. Though scheduled in DeKalb, the match will likely take place in Rockford at Boylan Tennis Center.
