DeKALB, Ill. - Home sweet home. The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team returns to its stomping grounds Friday when it hosts Western Michigan after a nail-biter at Southern Illinois March 24. The end result was another Huskie victory, extending NIU’s three-match winning streak. The match will take place March 29 at 11 a.m. at Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford.
NIU got off to a rocky start as SIU took the lead in doubles but the Huskies did not stay down for long. In singles competition, No.1 Dor Amir and No. 5 Simon Formont prevailed over their competition in two sets. Frederic Cadieux extended his unbeaten record at the No. 2 position after defeating Jorge Cavao, 6-4. 6-4.
Senior Max Phillips put the icing on the cake at No. 4 with his victory over Rafael Cuadrillero, 6-4, 6-4 leading the Huskies to their 12th win of the season. Cadieux improved to 16-1 this spring with his victory and has won his last seven contests.
Friday’s match against the Broncos will be NIU’s final home match of the regular season and the final home contest for Phillips as well. The senior has recorded over 53 wins in singles competition and 34 victories in doubles play.
The Huskies will look to stop Western Michigan’s (14-7) six-match winning streak, their latest victory being a 6-1 win over Grand Valley State. The Broncos have played a majority of their matches at home this season and are 1-5 on the road.
Friday’s match will be the Broncos first conference match of the season and the Huskies second. Northern Illinois defeated Chicago State Jan. 25 in DeKalb with NIU emerging victorious, 6-1.
The last time these two teams squared off was in last year’s MAC Tournament semifinals April 27 at Toledo, where Western Michigan defeated Northern Illinois, 4-3.
The Huskies will return to action next weekend for a pair of matches in Indiana, taking on Ball State April 6 and IPFW April 7.
