HUSKIE MEN'S TENNIS CLAIMS FIRST MAC WIN OF THE YEAR WITH 6-1 VICTORY OVER BUFFALO
AURORA, IL - What better way to make up for a disappointing loss than to get right back on the court for a chance at redemption? The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team took full advantage of that chance, claiming a 6-1 victory over the University at Buffalo here Sunday (April 7), one day after dropping a tough match to Mid-American Conference favorites Ball State University on Saturday. The win was the first league victory for Northern Illinois and upped its overall season record to 10-7.

"We played pretty well today, especially at the top of the lineup," NIU head coach Steven Rodecap mentioned. "It's nice to get back in the win column after a tough loss like yesterday."

Northern Illinois set the tone in doubles action, taking a 1-0 lead with wins in all three flights. Juan Pablo Barriga (Ario de Rosales de Michoacan, Mexico / Colegio de Bachilleres) and Erick Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico / Preparatoria Abierta) led the way with an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles. The Mexican-duo improved their team-best doubles record to 7-2.

Domination continued for the Huskies in singles play, especially in the top part of the lineup. Barriga and Martinez claimed straight set victories in No. 2 and 3 singles respectively while No. 1 player Raymond van Wasbeek (Vaassen, Netherlands) hammered UB's Fery Kasiman, 6-0, 6-1.

In No. 5 singles, NIU's David Pickel (Highland Park) kept pace with van Wasbeek for the team-lead in victories, posting his fifteenth of the season with a 6-0, 6-1, defeat of Josh Liederman. Senior Tim Freesen (Jacksonville) took advantage at his chance in the lineup with a 6-4, 6-2, triumph in No. 6 singles.

"We played so much more relaxed today and that really helped," added Rodecap. "We didn't get bothered by the little things out there and we just played solid tennis."

Northern Illinois will take a break from Mid-American Conference action when it plays host to the University of Illinois-Chicago on Tuesday (April 9). The battle between former Midwestern Collegiate Conference foes is set to begin at 3 p.m.
