DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois men’s tennis team will travel to Detroit and Toledo this weekend to do battle with the Titans on Friday and the Rockets on Sunday after a split weekend in the Hoosier State against Ball State (L, 7-0) and IPFW (W, 4-3). The match between the Huskies (1-2) and Rockets (0-2) will be NIU’s fourth Mid-American Conference match of the season.
The Huskies (13-7, 1-2 MAC) looked to bring another MAC victory home as they battled the Ball State Cardinals. The pair of Frederic Cadieux and Jovan Zeljkovic won at the No. 3 double position, defeating their competitors, 8-6. Axel Lagerlof returned to action at the No. 1 position where he fought his way through three sets before falling to Ray Leonard in the final set, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The Cardinals won the match, 7-0.
NIU quickly regained spirit as they traveled to IPFW to meet the Mastodons (7-12). The Huskies took the lead early, winning doubles and followed up by claiming three singles points. Cadieux continued his undefeated streak at No. 2 after demolishing his competition, 6-1, 6-1. In the No. 5 position, Simon Formont defeated Martin Muadi , 6-2, 6-2 while Dor Amir would seal NIU’s win after going three sets at No.1, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6. Northern Illinois prevailed over IPFW 4-3.
Northern Illinois looks to advance to a two-game win streak when they take on Detroit April 12 at 6 p.m. CT. The Titans hold a 5-12 record and are coming off a 4-3 win against Valparaiso.
Toledo will play its only match of the weekend Sunday against the Huskies and will enter the contest with an overall record of 18-8 and an 0-2 mark in conference. The Rockets are coming off a 4-3 loss to Buffalo on their home UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
Northern Illinois will close its season next Sunday when it heads to New York to take on Buffalo April 21, starting at 10 a.m. Central.
