DEKALB, Ill. - After winning his ninth-straight match at No. 1 singles last Sunday, Northern Illinois men's tennis freshman Maksym Bartiuk was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
Bartiuk extended his singles winning streak to nine matches with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Buffalo's Wojciech Starakiewicz at No. 1 singles Sunday April 11. The 6-foot-1 Ukraine native also teamed with fellow freshman Maximilian Phillips to post an 8-6 win at the No. 2 doubles position.
"Maksym's results really speak for themselves," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "He has proven to be one of the best players in our league, and is certainly worthy of winning Player of the Week honors. This honor is very exciting for him and hopefully it is the first of many.
"Not only is Maksym a great player, but he is also a great kid. He has proven to be the total package as a student-athlete. We are glad that he is a Huskie, and are very excited about his career here at NIU."
Bartiuk, who has won six-consecutive matches in straight sets, has played at No. 1 singles in 17 of the Huskies 18 matches this season. Bartiuk leads the Huskies with a 12-4 overall record and owns a 2-0 mark in MAC play.
Bartiuk becomes the first NIU player and MAC freshman to earn MAC Player of the Week plaudits this season.
