DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team, the MAC's co-Regular Season Champion, will head to Toledo for the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line. The Huskies will open play in the semifinals Friday April 27th 1 p.m. Central and face the winner of the Chicago State and Western Michigan match.
The Huskies closed the regular season last Friday with a doubleheader in Chicago, facing CSU and UIC. Northern Illinois made a clean sweep of the Cougars, winning all of their matches to the tune of a 7-0 triumph and finishing the MAC season with a 4-1 record. NIU followed up with a contest against Illinois-Chicago and triumphed with a 5-0 victory, as two of the final singles matches were called due to weather.
On Saturday, the Huskies were crowned the MAC's co-Regular Season Champion following Buffalo's loss to Ball State. It is the first MAC Championship in the men's tennis program's history and the seventh conference championship overall. Northern Illinois won six conference championships between 1991-97, three in the Mid-Continent Conference Championships and three in the Midwestern Conference.
The Huskies last won a MAC Tournament contest in 2009, defeating Chicago State in the quarterfinals, 4-1, before falling to Toledo in the semifinals the next day. NIU reached the championship match in 2003 as the host of the tournament, losing to Ball State, 4-2.
The NIU men's tennis program has never sent a team to NCAA Team Tournament play, only individuals. The Huskies last sent an individual to the NCAA Tournament in 1973, when Tim and Tom Gullikson qualified for championship play.
The MAC Championship match will be played Saturday April 28 at 1 p.m. Should Northern Illinois claim the title, the NCAA Selection Show will be aired Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Central time.
