SKILLMAN, N.J.  – The Northern Illinois men’s tennis team finished the 2013 tennis season ranked amongst the top-10 teams in the Midwest in the ITA’s final regional poll released June 5. The Huskies finished the season 16-9 en route to a No. 10 ranking in the poll.

“I think its further proof of how we’ve been building our program over the last three or four years,” said Head Coach Patrick Fisher. “Having this sort of recognition is proof for the guys that we’re heading in the right direction and where our program is on a regional level. Now we want to reach that level on a national scale.”

NIU finished the regular season 15-8, before closing the year 16-9, defeating top-seeded Ball State, 4-2, in the MAC Tournament semifinal to advance to the MAC Championship versus Western Michigan. The Huskies battled with the Broncos but fell in the final match, 4-3.

Post season honors followed for NIU as well as sophomore Dor Amir and junior Axel Lagerlof earned first All-MAC honors while sophomore Frederic Cadieux garnered second team All-MAC recognition. Both Amir and Cadieux also collected Academic All-Mid American Conference honors as well.

“It’s great accomplishment not only for our tennis program but for NIU. We’ve gotten a lot of great press this year and this will only add to that success we’ve had as a department,” Fisher closed.

Northern Illinois joins the ranks of several Big 10 teams and Notre Dame in the Midwest regions’ final poll. The appearance is a sign of the Huskies progress as they won the MAC’s 2012 regular season championship after going 4-1 against their conference foes.
